[Anise does exactly that, then. But she hovers a little by the doorway. Um.]

... Nothing. [Anise just shrugs.]

Um. I went to that meeting thing, earlier! Even if that blue guy says I don't have to go.

Oh? What did they talk about?

Stuff. Like going in teams or groups and things like that.

Not that I'm going! I'm staying right here.

I'm not...sure that you really can. Last time even those that refused were...forced to go.

Yeah, I thought so. It'd be too easy if they let me go, just like that. [Anise scowls, and sighs.]

I would prefer the village wasn't involved at all in someone else's war.

I would prefer that we'd all get to make our own decisions about stuff like going to war.

[Upon hearing Nephry's voice in his journal, Peony walks towards her room and knocks on her door.]

Nephry? Are you in there?

[He opens the door and immediately heads inside.]

How are you? [Aside from being worried, that is.]

I'm fine, Your Majesty. How are you?

I'm doing well. [He takes a seat on the edge of her bed.] I see you're concerned about the draftees.

Do you feel I shouldn't be?

Of course not. In fact I would be shocked if you weren't concerned.

And do you share my concern?

I do, but I'm confident in their ability to get through this.

So you feel that concern implies a lack of confidence.

[sob no] If I felt that way, then I wouldn't be concerned.

[a nod, and a moment or two of silence.]

Was there something you needed, Peony?

I just wanted to see how you were doing. [And how she's holding up, what with the previous experiment and the upcoming draft.]

I'm fine. [the worst that happened in the experiment was a house overrun with cats. A few probably still linger.] I'm not sure I could say the same for Saphir. He doesn't seem to like animals.

[S'cool. Jade Jr. probably glared them all away.]

He doesn't seem to mind my rappigs. [Or Peony just ignores him when he throws one of his tantrums.]

[Oh, Peony. Sometimes your oblivion just makes her smile.]

[He flops back on her bed. Personal boundaries? What's that? He stares at the ceiling.]

I should talk to Anise before she goes.
