[Having nightmares isn't uncommon for Anise, but this one is worse than usual. Her parents, dead. Mohs laughing at her misery, telling her in that smug voice of his that its her fault for tattling.]
[In the real world, she begins to twist and thrash, tangling herself in the heavy blankets. Occasionally, she lets out a little whimper.]
[It's early in the evening that the door quietly opens and Ion walks in. He's soaked from the rain and the sleeves of his shirt are stained with blood that doesn't belong to him. His expression is likely difficult to pinpoint, but it's certainly not happy.]
[He glances around the room for a moment and, seeing no one, starts to make a beeline for his room.]
[It can be difficult to sleep for long in a place you aren't certain that is real.
The first night, she had been too exhausted for the nightmares, too worn out by the course of that day's events, and so she had at least slept through that night.
The next night, however, was different. Different, perhaps, due to all she had experienced throughout the course of that day, the sheer ups and downs of emotions, the surges of confusion. If mother didn't want us, how could anyone else? That desperate, overshadowing thought.
And so it was near the middle of the night when the young girl awoke, alone in the bedroom, seized with an inexplicable fear, a drumming in her heart, and even then, she wasn't quite fully awake. Not enough for pure, rational thought. Only the thought to go -- to scramble out, as far as she could -- although even realizing that even here there was nowhere to go.
And the weather is cold. Even the house at night is cold once blankets are gone, and eventually she instead finds the furthest corner in the house she can find, sitting with her knees tucked up to her chest.
Without anyone to protect, she was just a child, herself. Without Genis there, she had never felt so small.]
[AND THEN OUT OF NOWHERE -- well, not quite nowhere, since he's walking in through the front door and all -- there is a fon master in pajamas. Since that is exactly how they kidnapped him and they just kind of let him sleep for the whole time. If he hadn't woken up outside, he may not have even remembered being kidnapped at all! But at least they had the decency to give him slippers.]
[He's just going to glance around the first floor and see if anyone's home before he heads upstairs to change.]
[The past few weeks have been... difficult. Kohan was kidnapped, leading to a seemingly endless paranoia that he could be sent home without Ion ever even knowing at any time. Tear was out of the village on a mission, and just last week Anise was kidnapped as well. And ever since the last draft, there was a definite tension in the air whenever Ion happened to be in the same room with Jade. And though Ion keeps telling himself that this is his problem and Jade isn't at fault, the longer things continue on like this, the more he starts to want to blame Jade. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he can't help but feel it would just be easier if he could.]
[And now, just this morning, Luke and Xion have both been sent home. And though realistically he knows that's the worst of everything that's happened, he still feels so numb to the news. He set his journal on the floor and sat there, staring off at nothing for longer than he even realized before simply laying back down.]
[Lately it seemed as though things just weren't getting easier. Ion was still sick, and the weaker he became, the more difficult it was to find a reason to get out of bed every morning. What was the point? He could rationalize that if he stayed in bed all day, it would make the others worry. He could rationalize that resigning to his bed would be akin to resigning to his fate. He could rationalize that just as there was no reason to get out of bed, there was also no reason to stay in it. And yet no matter how much he tried to rationalize it, he just couldn't convince himself.]
[Today was a bad day. It was raining, so he knew right away that there was no way he would be able to go outside today. Which is probably why despite the fact that it's now well past noon, he's still in bed, laying on his back with his head turned to look out the window. He felt so tired, and he just didn't want to deal with false cheer and pleasantries right now. As terrible as it was to even think, he really wished everything could just go away right now. He's not so sure he would mind if it did.]
[It felt like all of the blood rushed out of his head when he read those words.
"a Shift explosive"
"chose to side with the Iron Eye"
"it should be deployed any day now"
There were a lot of things Luke didn't understand about what was going on, but he at least knew what that meant. There was a bomb, and the people on the mission agreed to drop it on the cultists. Hundreds, maybe thousands would die, there'd be a dead zone, and - and they were defending themselves, saying they were right, and Luke, he - he knew why, but all those people, and -
He needed to stop before he passed out or something, because all he could see was a bright light, a cloud of smoke, corpses littering the ground -
A thunk is heard from his room as he stands, only to fall heavily to his knees when he loses his balance. And should someone open his door, they'll find that hasn't moved from that spot, only shifted his position, sitting with his back against the desk and curled up, head between his knees, fingers twisted and shaking in his hair, breathing quick yet deep, like he's trying to control them.
No, no, what were they thinking, how could they go through a decision like that, how could they kill so many, there's blood on his hands and they were the enemy yet they were people too, and the mission, the mines, the workers looking at him with hope, the explosion - ]
