There has been a Shift that displaced some of us from our homes this past evening. We should be prepared for the possibility that it will happen again tonight, but in light of the lack of serious injuries it seems the preparations for the festival, and our lives in general, may proceed.

Unless there are other complications from this Shift?

[Nephry runs one hand over his hair and down his face until she can lift his chin so he looks at her.]

I know that this festival is important to you, Ion. I also know that you wouldn't worry about having to stay home and rest if you didn't think it was probably the right decision to make.

[He looks up, but he's still frowning. Only now it's because he knows she's right.]

I was on the ladder hanging up some streamers, when I heard a loud crash in the other room. So I started trying to climb down, but my foot slipped.

I grabbed onto the ladder to try and keep from falling, but the ladder shook and started to fall sideways and there was nothing else to grab onto.

I landed on my side and the ladder landed on top of me. The crash was just a box falling off of a shelf, but I guess I made an even bigger crash when I fell...

[Insert a nervous trying-to-make-it-sound-less-bad-than-it-actually-was laugh here.]

[she can't help but gasp a little bit. He could have been hurt, badly! And what's more, any bruises and such that he does have could have been treated that day. Which would be much better for him and no wonder he was so tired yesterday]

I had a few scrapes, but I had those bandaged and they're fine now. It's just the bruise on my side that's been bothering me.

[what worries her the most is that he almost always hides things like this from her, and most likely from Saphir too, even though Saphir is much less likely to pry.

...all right. I'll rest today and take it easy the rest of the week.

I'll have to speak to Father Wolfwood about being more selective about who he sends up on ladders.

Well, usually he has someone else up on the ladder, but they were busy with something else so I offered to help instead...

[For a moment, Ion's eyes fall back to the ground. She may not be punishing him, but the guilt of knowing he's upset her is punishment enough.]

[Being helpful is one thing. Being helpful to the point of seriously injuring himself was another. Especially when this is probably not the first time they've had this conversation.]

[Somehow, that doesn't reassure him. Maybe if he wasn't so weak, so fragile, she wouldn't have to worry about him at all.]

[Mommy he doesn't care that you spent the first few years of his life dressing him, there are lines of privacy you don't don't cross!]




[...okay, he really just doesn't want her to see how bad the bruise is. Without thinking, he grips the edge of his shirt.]

[No privacy stands when one of her children is injured. ...Well, all right, there are certain things she would refer to Saphir instead. But if it's just his side there shouldn't be an issue.]

I do. [but she would never force him to show her, and he knows that. All she really wants is to judge if she needs to take him to a doctor today.]

[He knows she wouldn't, but she really wouldn't have to force him. He already lied about getting the injury and was caught, and lying about it's severity would only make him feel worse. It's not quite severe enough to require medical attention, but it is enough to give him a good deal of pain if he accidentally twists or bends.]

[He weighs this in his head before timidly lifting his shirt and showing part of the dark purple bruise on his right side, which spanned at least 5 inches. There were a few small bandaged scrapes around the area as well.]

[to her credit, she manages not to gasp at the sight of it, just barely. But that bruise is wider across than her hand. And it's been historically best to err on the side of caution regarding Ion's condition]

That must hurt. [takes his wrist, to free him of the obligation of holding up his shirt] You should go and get your shoes.

[He lets his shirt drop and frowns at the request, not moving. He knows she wants to take him to see a doctor, but if that happened, Dad would find out and then they'd both be worrying about him...!]

[He can't let that happen.]

It... it isn't as bad as it looks. [Gently, he tries to pull his hand back.] Mom, really, I'm fine.
