I won't be participating in the fighting. Not all of us are, not all of us can for whatever our reasons may be. I'm not a doctor, but the probability of having injured persons returned to us is greater than not, so I would like offer my services in an assistance capacity in however its needed. As for suggestions...maybe it would be best to put together a list of things in the village that need up-keeping, those who will potentially be absent from their duties due participating in the war and a list of those who aren't and are available to temp, so to speak, in those needed positions until the fighters are returned.
